Product Focus: R21

By Vivekan Iyengar, Product Manager

R21 furthers Spatial's product commitment to ensure 3D ACIS Modeler and 3D InterOp provide the highest quality suite of geometrical operators for engineering applications. ACIS R21 introduces the support for point clouds allowing metrology and reverse engineering based applications to import and use laser scan point sets for entity point distance and other ACIS operations. Support for point clouds in ACIS includes creation and storage of points, boolean, history/rollback operations and visualization of point sets using HOOPS.

Strong customer feedback for ACIS R21 development was to reduce the memory footprint and facet count for tessellating ACIS models. R21 offers all ACIS based applications significant reduction in the total memory footprint using a new surface gridding for efficient detection of surface features. ACIS R21 faceter also provides a new faceter API with pre-defined settings for 3D visualization, precise and expert mode resulting in easier and faster implementation time. ACIS R21 includes support for fail safe slice operations allowing metrology applications to generate partial scan line results when working with large complex ACIS models. ACIS R21 also includes enhancements to Thickening & Projection components for working with imported tolerant geometry.

R21 continues Spatial's commitment to ensure 3D InterOp generates high quality manufacturable models for editing and reuse by engineering applications. 3D InterOp R21 enhances InterOp PMI for process automation, providing support for CATIA V5 PMI capture sets, CATIA V5 hidden PMI, and PMI feature names. All applications using InterOp R21 can take advantage of significant performance improvements in importing color/name attributes from CATIA V5 files along with geometry/topology import from IGES, STEP and VDA files. 3D InterOp R21 also supports the latest versions of industry specific CAD formats including CATIA V5 R20, NX7, Wildfire 5.0, SolidWorks 2010, Inventor 2010, and Parasolid 22.

A complete list of ACIS and 3D InterOp R21 functionality can be found at R21 ACIS Release Notes and R21 3D InterOp Release Notes.
