Read moreSTP-to-IGES conversion is commonly used when a downstream application supports IGES but cannot directly consume STEP data. This can occur in legacy CAD environments, supplier workflows, manufacturing processes, or engineering toolchains built around established neutral exchange formats.
The conversion can also be useful when the primary requirement is to exchange precise part geometry rather than preserve the full product structure or model-based definition data contained in the original STEP file.
3D InterOp provides the translation capabilities needed to move precise CAD geometry from STEP into IGES as part of an application workflow. Because both formats can represent exact B-Rep and surface geometry, the conversion can preserve an engineering representation of the model without first reducing it to a tessellated mesh.
3D InterOp handles the reading of the STEP source data and the writing of the corresponding IGES geometry. This allows developers to integrate STP-to-IGES translation directly into their software while using a single interoperability toolkit for multiple CAD formats.
When the STEP file contains richer information such as PMI or product structure, 3D InterOp also gives the application access to the source data before export. Developers can therefore determine which information is relevant to their workflow and account for data that the IGES target format does not represent in the same way.
STEP and IGES can both represent precise B-Rep and surface geometry, so the core shape of a CAD model can generally be transferred without first converting it to a tessellated mesh.
However, STEP can contain information that IGES does not represent in the same way. STEP AP242, for example, can carry product manufacturing information (PMI) associated with model geometry. 3D InterOp supports reading and writing STEP AP242 PMI, but equivalent PMI writing is not documented for IGES.
For this reason, an STP-to-IGES workflow should primarily be considered a geometry exchange workflow. PMI, assembly-level information, and other STEP-specific model intelligence should be reviewed separately when they are important to the downstream process.
3D InterOp provides developers with APIs for reading CAD data from STEP files and translating the resulting geometry into another supported format such as IGES.
Because both STEP and IGES can carry precise CAD geometry, this workflow does not inherently require tessellating the model into a polygon mesh.
Yes. 3D InterOp is designed to read and translate supported CAD formats through an application without requiring the original CAD authoring system.
STEP and IGES can both represent precise B-Rep and surface geometry. Unlike conversion to a mesh format such as STL, an STP-to-IGES conversion does not inherently require tessellating the model into triangles.
STEP AP242 can contain graphical and semantic PMI, and 3D InterOp supports PMI capabilities for STEP. Equivalent PMI writing is not documented for IGES, so PMI should not be assumed to survive an STP-to-IGES conversion.
IGES may still be required by downstream CAD systems, legacy engineering applications, suppliers, or other workflows that use IGES as an exchange format. Converting from STEP allows the geometric model to be supplied in the format expected by those systems.
