Convert STP to STL in your application
3D InterOp is a CAD interoperability SDK that lets your software read STEP files and write STL meshes, tessellated from the exact geometry — no CAD license required.
Spatial does not offer an online converter or a desktop conversion app. 3D InterOp is a component that software vendors embed in their own products.
- Reads STEP · Writes STL
- Exact geometry → triangle mesh

STP to STL at a glance
STEP stores exact geometry; STL stores triangles. The translation is a tessellation, and the settings you choose decide how close the mesh stays to the original.
| STEP (source) | STL (target) | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Standard for the Exchange of Product model data | Stereolithography |
| Standard / owner | ISO 10303 — AP203, AP214, AP242 | Open format |
| File extensions | .stp, .step | .stl |
| Geometry | Exact B-Rep | Triangle mesh |
| Assemblies / structure | Yes | No |
| PMI | Graphical and semantic (AP242) | None |

What's preserved, what changes
Here is what your application can expect to carry across from STEP to STL.
-
Preserved
Part shapeSolids and surfaces are written as tessellated faces, within the tessellation settings your application uses.
-
Improved
Model qualityGeometric and topological healing is applied during translation, so the mesh is generated from a clean model.
-
Changes
Geometry is tessellatedThe exact STEP B-Rep is replaced by a triangle mesh, generated by 3D InterOp from the exact geometry it reads. Accuracy depends on the tessellation settings your application uses.
-
Changes
Assembly structureSTL has no native assembly hierarchy. Decide in your application how STEP product structure is grouped or flattened before writing.
-
Not carried
PMIThe STL writer writes geometry only: PMI read from the STEP file is not written to STL.
-
Not carried
Materials and texturesSTL has no material or texture data.
Why software vendors add STP to STL conversion
Additive manufacturing
STL is still the input most slicers and print services expect. Writing it lets your users send parts to print directly.
Mesh-based processing
Inspection, scan comparison and mesh-editing tools work on triangles. A mesh output gives them a model they can open anywhere.
Lightweight sharing
A mesh is simpler than the native CAD file and needs no CAD system to open.
Things to check before you ship
- STL files store no units: agree on the unit with the application that reads them (the 3D InterOp STL reader assumes millimeters).
- Only solids and surfaces are written to STL: wires and points from the STEP file are not.
- Test tessellation settings on your heaviest parts: finer meshes mean larger files.
- Validate a sample of translated files in the target system your users actually work with.

Working with Spatial was a real milestone for us: Thanks to the powerful 3DInterOp library, we were able to successfully bring our complex CAD-based solutions to the cloud while remaining flexible to meet individual customer requirements. For us, Spatial is not just a technology partner, but a true enabler of our product strategy.

What is a STEP (.stp) file?
STEP is the ISO 10303 standard for exchanging 3D product data between CAD systems. Its application protocols range from exact geometry (AP203, AP214) to full model-based definition with PMI (AP242).

What is an STL file?
STL describes a 3D surface as a set of triangles, with no units, materials or assembly structure. Its simplicity makes it the usual input for 3D printing.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on the tessellation settings your application uses. Tighter settings give a mesh closer to the exact geometry, and larger files.
3D InterOp reads STEP assemblies. STL has no assembly hierarchy, so the assembly structure is not kept in the STL output.
No. STL stores triangles only, with no units, colors or textures. Agree on the unit with the application that reads the file; the 3D InterOp STL reader assumes millimeters.
No. The STL writer writes geometry only, so PMI read from the STEP file isn’t written.
No. Only solids and surfaces are written to STL.
AP203, AP214 and AP242, from .stp, .step and .stpx files. Compressed .stpZ and .stpxZ files and .stpa files are read too.
Yes. 3D InterOp reads and writes both formats. The STL triangles are written to STEP as faceted geometry, not rebuilt as solids.
