Rapid 2016 – 3D Printing & Additive Manufacturing Event

On May 15-19, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers held their annual RAPID event — the longest-running, additive manufacturing conference in North America. I attended the show last year, so I was surprised at how much the focus of the show had changed.

When 3D Software Development Toolkits Make Sense

Make or buy is an age old question for anyone building products, whether hardware or software. For example, for a manufacturer, does it make sense to buy a pre-built assembly or design and build their own? The same question arises for software developers: take advantage of existing SDKs to solve a particular problem or write custom code. And unfortunately, the answer always is “it depends.”

Whither 3D Modeling

The term disruptive technology is often overused (and typically just marketing hype), but there are some technologies that evolve over time, having an ever increasing impact on our lives. 3D Modeling is one such technology, often unseen by the public, but changing the way products and systems are designed. Some industries such as aviation could not dream of returning to a world of 2D drawings. But other industries have been slower to adopt the technology, or have limited its rollout.

Seven Years of Thread Safe 3D ACIS Modeler

We are moving things around in the office here at Spatial to accommodate some new people.  As a result, our marketing closet is being cleaned out.  I walked by and noticed t-shirts from the summer of 2009, when Spatial released R20 of the 3D ACIS Modeler.  Since that release, the 3D ACIS Modeler has been thread safe, i.e, able to operate on disjoint data concurrently and correctly. The t-shirt in question made some predictions about the future of processor evolution. Some predictions came true, some did not.

Innovative 3D Uses for AEC/BIM and supporting Advanced Workflows for Additive Manufacturing — Take-Aways from COE 2016

The COE 2016 Annual PLM Experience and TechniFair was held last week in San Antonio. This was my first year attending the event for users of Dassault Systèmes software solutions.  As it turns out there was a lot I did not really understand about this show that I had heard so much about over the years.  In years past when I heard COE referenced, I erroneously thought it was a Dassault Systèmes event. But COE is a well-organized user group, bringing industry professionals together.
