Spatial Releases 2018 1.0.1 to Enhance 3D Modeling and Interoperability Workflows
BROOMFIELD, Colo., December 12, 2017 — Spatial Corp, the leading provider of 3D software development toolkits (SDKs) for design, manufacturing, and engineering solutions, and a subsidiary of Dassault Systèmes, today announced the availability of service pack 2018 1.0.1. This release delivers an increased number of supported 3D file formats, enabling users to optimize the interaction with their 3D data. Also in this release are major improvements to mesh healing, along with greater usability for the end user, which enables them to get to market faster.
This release provides major improvements for Additive Manufacturing applications. CGM Polyhedra has been extended with advanced healing capabilities so that imperfect input data, which is common with STL files, can be cleaned and healed with greater preservation of the design intent. This allows 3D Printing applications to proceed with generation of proper slice curves that were not previously possible. Major improvements have been made to mesh healing, including enhancements to the hole-filling operator, and a new operator to repair slivers and triangle intersections — all with the goal of making the model more manufacturable.
For design applications, the modeler has been enhanced with the addition of a new function to convert Unicode text strings to model geometry, a feature useful for logos and other embossed/raised text in finished products. Supporting electronic design automation is the addition of a new high-performance N-body unite function, which can dramatically increase performance when combining a large number of bodies. This feature is especially useful in EDA workflows when preparing models for structural, thermal and electromechanical analysis.
For Metrology (CMM) and Manufacturing (CAM) workflows, this release of 3D InterOp brings additional product manufacturing information (PMI) through translation. This PMI is critical to refine CMM and CAM processes, and provides the opportunity for greater automation when making and measuring products.
Across all industries, 3D InterOp provides new and updated data formats and improved quality, as well as expanding the type of data that can be imported.
Spatial is always working to improve the quality of the data produced during the translation process. The STEP translator now features better handling of some special cases in assemblies to improve both performance and memory usage. For both IGES and STEP translation, the handling of surface bodies has been improved.
Updates to CAD Versions
The 2018 1.0.1 release includes updated support for new versions of CAD files:
- Solid EDGE version ST10
- Inventor version 2018
- DXF/DWG version 2018
- Parasolid kernel version 30
- Support for New Formats
For users of the CGM Core Modeler, support for reading Rhinoceros application (3DM) file data has been added. Rhinoceros is a CAD application used in a wide range of areas including jewelry, architecture, industrial design, aircraft design, as well as general CAD and CAM usage.
Expanding the Range of Imported Data
This release expands the types of data that 3D InterOp can import:
- For STEP AP 242, support for semantic PMI data, such as dimensions, geometric tolerances and datums has been added.
- For Dassault Systèmes’ SOLIDWORKS, users are able to now import 2D and 3D sketch data. Many of the modeling features provided by SOLIDWORKS are based on sketch data as the input to define some aspect of the feature’s shape.

Shipping with service pack 1 is a bridge from the modelers to new HTML export capability via HOOPS Visualize. This new feature allows any HOOPS Visualize application or developer to publish a self-contained HTML file that can be shared and viewed by any end user using any (modern) web browser. No special software needs to be installed by the end user to access the resulting immersive visualization experience.
